The world has watched in horror as, for over a week, Russia invades Ukraine. What has been particularly upsetting is the apparent lack of support from Ukraine’s allies, including the United States. World leaders have talked big, and the U.N. voted to condemn the attack, but nobody seems to be taking up arms to stop Putin’s madness.
Some refuse to fight because they fear how it will escalate. It might not take much for this to turn into a global conflict. Nobody wants to be responsible for starting WWIII. But one Ukrainian official, understandably upset, has declared the war has already started.
From Fox News:
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine represents the beginning of World War III, an attack on the free world, a Ukrainian member of parliament told Fox News early Thursday…
“The World War III already started. If somebody doesn’t see it, it’s their problem,” the lawmaker said. “It’s war, not against Ukraine, but against the whole free world.”
Alexey Goncharenko might not be 100% right. But he is simply expressing his outrage that the world is not doing enough to stop the power-hungry Putin. Biden, still offering lip service to Ukraine, is taking another small step to “aid” the battered country.
From Fox News:
The Biden administration is requesting at least $10 billion in new money to provide aid to Ukraine amid Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war against the nation, according to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
Of course, this would add to the deficit and put a financial strain on our country. Biden appears unable to do anything that doesn’t hurt Americans in the end. As fears increase that this war could go global, Russians seem to be fearful of a larger conflict.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday that if a third World War were to take place, it would involve nuclear weapons and be destructive, the RIA news agency reported.
Lavrov has said that Russia, which launched what it calls a special military operation against Ukraine last week, would face a “real danger” if Kyiv acquired nuclear weapons.
It’s hard to believe anything coming from a Russian leader at this point. Russia’s Foreign Minister Lavrov seemed to discourage the idea of a global war, saying that it would be equally as destructive for Russia as for anyone else. This could be the country’s stance or it could be a misdirect.
Or, it could be Lavrov’s attempts at de-escalating claims made by Putin. The Russian president has promised to use nukes against anyone that tried to interfere—a threat that has shown most world leaders to be cowards in response. While it appears the Russian government is behind Putin 100%, Lavrov’s words might be a sign that they are willing to push back against their president.
The fact remains that this invasion by Russia cannot be left unanswered. And, so far, European leaders, America, and other allies have not been doing enough. Goncharenko’s claims about WWIII might be overstated, but he is right in that this invasion cannot be ignored. How the world responds to Putin’s unprovoked attack will determine if the next decade is peaceful or destructive.
Biden’s response has been to sanction Russia—which has only hurt the United States. Sending $10 billion in aid might sound good until you realize it will add to our deficit and hamper our economy. Biden has already overextended himself in government spending. There has to be a better way to aid Ukraine, which doesn’t put American families in the red.
But we might not see that solution appear soon.
- A Ukrainian parliament member claimed WWIII has already started.
- Russian claims they do not want a global war, or the use of nuclear weapons.
- Biden wants $10 billion from Congress for Ukrainian aid.
