NBA star LeBron James went to Europe to watch the UEFA Champions League final and got a rude welcome from fans of the winning club Real Madrid. James is a part-owner of the losing soccer team Liverpool.
Liverpool played Real Madrid in Paris for the title. LeBron was showboating on his way to Stade de France to watch the match jokingly asking Liverpool not to start the game before he arrived at the stadium.
Liverpool lost the match and Real Madrid raised the trophy for a record 14th time. According to CBS: “The UEFA Champions League, originally named the European Cup before it was changed to its current name prior to the 1992-93 season, has been around since 1955, with 22 different champions from 13 different countries.
“Real Madrid is by far the team with the most titles, with 14, followed by AC Milan with seven.”
If losing wasn’t bad enough for James, he got heckled by Real Madrid fans who reminded him that he wasn’t the greatest player of all time but Michal Jordan was.
They chanted:”’Michael Jordan better” and while James tried to shrug it off he knows it is the truth.
According to The Sporting News:
A key reason for James’s love for the Reds is the fact he’s held a minority ownership stake in the club since 2011.
As part of a sponsorship deal with Fenway Sports Group (FSG) at the time, the basketball star secured two percent of Liverpool for £4.7 million ($6.5 million) alongside business partner Maverick Carter.
James watched a game at Anfield following his acquisition and was taken by the support for the club.
“One of the single best experiences of my life! The excitement that these fans have is like no other,” James said.
